View of Lake Attersee

The Attersee is a lake in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut in the Vöcklabruck district and lies at 469 m above sea level. A. The course of the Attersee is the Ager, which drains over the Traun into the Danube. The nutrient-poor lake with its diverse banks offers habitats for many animal and plant species and has been designated as a Natura 2000 area since 2006. With over 46 km² of water, it is the largest lake entirely in Austria. At 169 meters, it is the third deepest lake in Austria and, with a water volume of almost 4 billion cubic meters, exceeds many of the larger lakes in terms of area. The Attersee, owned by the Austrian Federal Forests, is an important tourist destination in Upper Austria and a popular swimming lake as well as a diving and sailing area. On the shores of the Attersee there are remains of Neolithic pile dwellings that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.

View of Lake Attersee from the ridge near Berg. At an altitude of approximately 650 meters, a panorama opens up above the village of Berg that is hard to surpass in its vastness and tranquility. Lake Attersee stretches out in front of you in a rich blue, nestled between gently rising hills and the striking rock faces of the Höllengebirge in the background. From this perspective, the small villages along the shore appear almost like miniatures, blending harmoniously into the lush landscape.

Up here, surrounded by tranquil meadows and under a vast sky, everyday life seems to recede into the distance. A perfect place to pause – be it on a bike ride, a hike, or simply to take in the moment.

The village of Attersee am Attersee is known, among other things, for the early historic pile dwellings that were built directly on the lake in the Neolithic Age. Although these can no longer be visited today, since the settlements were flooded by the lake in the past, an informative pavilion has been built on the lake promenade, which tells the story of the pile dwellings. Those who are less interested in archeology and more interested in bathing fun will get their money's worth in the spacious Sprinzensteinpark outdoor bathing area. There is even an adventure pool with a water slide that leads directly into the lake.
