Canal du Centre Boat Lift No. 3

Highlight • Monument

This series of boat lifts on the Canal du Centre is an extraordinarily impressive example of the art of engineering from previous generations. Even back then, people found solutions to problems that at first glance seemed insoluble using relatively simple means, namely how to overcome a considerable difference in height with a ship that was not possible using the previous methods of simple lock construction. This construction has therefore quite rightly been recognized as an industrial world cultural heritage site by UNESCO.

A 15-minute film documentary (in German) is available in the ARD media library as part of the series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" => ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/canal-du-centre-die-vier-schiffshebewerke-des-canal-du-centre-belgien-folge-375/3sat/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS82NjEwNTUy

There are 4 old lifting devices on the historic Canal du Centre, some of which are being restored.
Great old, functional technology.

Strépy‑Thieu Boat Lift

Highlight • Monument

The Strépy-Thieu lift is a double boat lift located in Belgium, on the Canal du Centre in the Walloon Region in the province of Hainaut.

Started in 1982 and inaugurated in 2002, it allows, thanks to its two independent ferries, the crossing of a height difference of 73.15 meters between the Escaut basin and a dividing reach towards the Meuse basin also including a section of the Brussels-Charleroi Canal, limited by the Ronquières inclined plane (to the north) and the Viesville lock (to the south).

Until September 18, 2016, it was the largest boat lift in the world, the date on which the Three Gorges Dam boat lift was inaugurated. Thanks to its unique ferry, the Chinese elevator now allows 3,000-ton ships to cross the 113-meter drop in 40 minutes, rather than three hours via the existing water staircase.

The Strépy-Thieu boat lift

Highlight • Monument

This lift is one of the finest technological feats of modern Belgian civil engineering. With its extraordinary dimensions, it allows new generations of boats to overcome a height difference of 73.15 meters, which makes it the largest boat lift in Europe!

Visiting this site is very interesting. On the eighth floor, a gallery leading to a cinema is devoted to the history of shipping.

Canal du Centre Boat Lift No. 4

Highlight • Monument

The ship lifts on the Centrumkanaal are special constructions that ensure that ships can bridge the required height difference. The ships are lifted by four hydraulic lifts, after which they can sail further.

Water Wheel of Estinnes

Highlight • Monument

Water wheel 5 meters in diameter located in the square, in the middle of a four-tiered fountain. The waterwheel is very important in Estinnes: on the portion of the river that crosses the entity, there were 7 waterwheels, and as many flour mills, plus those of Good Hope, two windmills and a paper mill.
