Valenciennes Station

Highlight • Settlement

The Gare de Valenciennes is an impressive building with a rich history. The station was originally opened on 14 November 1842 and has been a major rail hub in the region ever since. The current building was built in 1909 by the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord. It is designed in a neoclassical style and consists of a central monumental building with two later side wings in red brick. The building is approximately 30 metres high and has undergone several renovations since the war, including a major renovation in 2013. The station is a symbol of the industrial history and development of public transport in Valenciennes.

Valenciennes Town Hall

Highlight • Settlement

Valenciennes Town Hall is a magnificent building with a rich history. The current town hall is located on the Place d'Armes and is an impressive example of neoclassical architecture. The building was originally built in the 17th century, but was largely destroyed during a bombing raid in 1940. It was later rebuilt and re-inaugurated in 1967.
The façade of the town hall is decorated with allegorical statues, the work of the sculptor Philippe Joseph Henri Lemaire. At the top of the building is a pediment by the famous sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The town hall is a symbol of the urban history and culture of Valenciennes and also houses a media library and various exhibitions.

Rue des Sayneurs

Highlight • Historical Site

It is a very old and very narrow little street, a survival of the old center of Valenciennes.
On the one hand, it has a "normal" width, then it narrows as it goes, to leave only one passage. This "wedge" effect is reinforced by the fact that at the narrowest point, the houses lean (slightly) towards each other, on either side of the passage.
In the street there are several houses which obviously belonged to craftsmen, with a shop on the ground floor and a house above.
