Description

If you're looking for a truly challenging touring cycling experience in Sonoma County, the Westminster Woods – Willow Creek Fire Road loop from Monte Rio delivers. This difficult 36.6-mile (58.9 km) route packs in 2970 feet (905 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 4 hours and 26 minutes to complete. It's a demanding ride best suited for experienced cyclists with very good fitness who are ready for diverse terrain and significant climbs.

What to expect on Westminster Woods – Willow Creek Fire Road loop from Monte Rio

This loop is a journey through some of California's most beautiful landscapes, starting from the tranquil Russian River and climbing into ancient redwood forests. You'll navigate a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, including demanding fire roads like the Willow Creek Road section, which winds through young redwoods, open meadows, and offers lovely vista views. Be prepared for a very steep 0.1-mile section with a 22% grade on Willow Creek Road; you might find yourself walking your bike here. The effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with cool, shaded creeks and even distant views of the Pacific Ocean from certain ridgelines.

Planning your visit

Accessing the Upper Willow Creek Road trailhead is unique; it's hike-in and bike-in only, meaning no vehicle parking is available directly at the trailhead. Cyclists are encouraged to ride in from Occidental for the best access to this popular route. While Class 1 e-bikes are permitted on most trails, it's advisable to carry a map or use GPS, as signage is still being installed in the expanded Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve area. Always be prepared for significant elevation changes and varied terrain.
