Dimitrios Dapanakis Street is named after one of the victims of the Kalavryta Massacre. This tragic event took place on December 13, 1943, during World War II, when German Wehrmacht troops murdered almost the entire male population of the town and destroyed it.

Today, many streets in Kalavryta are named after the men and boys who died in this war crime, in order to preserve their memory.

Sculpture "No Winners in War"

Highlight • Monument

The image shows a sculpture standing in front of the Municipal Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust in Kalavryta. The group of figures is titled "No Winners in War" (Greek: "Χωρίς νικητές στον πόλεμο") and was created in 1996 by the sculptor Nikos Dimopoulos.

The bronze statue depicts a desperate widow dragging the body of her executed husband on a cloth, accompanied by her children.

The monument commemorates the Kalavryta massacre on December 13, 1943, during World War II. In an act of revenge by the German occupiers, almost all male residents of the town over the age of 12 or 14 were executed.

Municipal Museum of the Holocaust of Kalavryta
(Greek: Δημοτικό Μουσείο Καλαβρυτινού Ολοκαυτώματος). The museum is housed in a former primary school built in 1906. On December 13, 1943, this building served as a gathering point during the Kalavryta massacre, where the German Wehrmacht separated men from their families.

The exhibition displays personal items of the victims, historical documents, and photographs documenting the atrocities of the National Socialists and the fate of the town.

The building is an imposing stone structure with neoclassical elements and prominent columns on the entrance facade.

This meanwhile renovated train is a hit and popular with tourists from all over the world. It can be useful to get your ticket online in advance.
Unfortunately in Greece information is not always easily accessible or up-to-date.
We wanted to take the train up through the spectacular Vouraikos gorge. Unfortunately the train didn't run because of a landslide. So we had to take a taxi to Kalavrita because the bus did not go on Saturday either: ((
Conversations with other E4 hikers on the route showed that the earth rush is not so severe and that you can hike up the tracks without any problems. It is also very relaxing when you know there is no train when you walk through the tunnel.
Definitely recommended, but be careful!
