Spotting the beaver family

Highlight • Natural

Meet the Bever family. If you look closely you will see many gnawing marks and other traces of their work around the Eglegem pond. The Bever family is quite shy and does not like to be disturbed. Feel free to view the tracks from a distance and respect the animals' habitat.

Eglegem Pond

Highlight • Lake

The Eglegemvijver (unofficially also Put van Hombeek) is a large pond of 36 hectares located southwest of the Belgian city of Mechelen. The majority of the pond is located on the territory of Hombeek (Mechelen) in the province of Antwerp. The southernmost part of the pond is located on the territory of the municipality of Zemst in the province of Flemish Brabant. The domain is owned by the Flemish Government and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests (ANB).

The pond is named after the Hoeve Eglegem (not to be confused with the Castle of Relegem, which is also located on the lake). On the Ferraris maps from the 1770s this farm can be seen under the name Egligem.

The Eglegem pond is popular with nature and bird lovers and holidaymakers. You can observe the water birds around the lake and in the lake you can go fishing, sailing, windsurfing and paddle surfing. Motorized water sports are not allowed, just like swimming. Dogs must be on a leash.

WVD Mechelen Sailing and Surfing is located here in Hombeek.

The Egleghemvijver has been the home base of the WVD for 50 years, also popularly known as 'the Put van Hombeek'.

Initially it was nothing more than a large pit that was left behind after the sand excavation in the late 1960s to raise part of the E19 between Antwerp and Brussels.

Now it is a water surface of 38 hectares in the middle of greenery, right on the border of Antwerp and Flemish Brabant. The majority of the pond is located in the territory of the province of Antwerp, but the southernmost part of the pond is located in Zemst, province of Flemish Brabant.

The Egleghem Pond has been a recreational pond for more than 50 years where you can sail, windsurf and fish (with a permit). Swimming is prohibited by law.
