Lake Windermere

Highlight • Lake

This is a great lake for water sports from rowing to sailing. It even has a swimming club and a yearly swimming race down the lake. Boat cruises go up and down the lake daily and there is a lovely esplanade in town along the lakes edge

At Claife Heights, is Claife Station, built in the 1790s as a viewpoint where visitors could look at Lake Windermere. It was most fashionable with tourists in the 1830s and 40s. The windows of the drawing room were the Station’s most celebrated feature; each had a different aspect, viewed through different coloured glass to enhance variations in weather and seasons. The tinted glass in these windows was intended to recreate lighting effects in the landscape. Yellow represented summer, orange was for autumn, light green for spring, and light blue for winter. There was also a dark blue for moonlight and a lilac tint to give the impression of a thunderstorm.

Joey's Cafe in the courtyard of the Claife Viewing Station serves baked goods, light meals, drinks and snacks. It's not owned or managed by the National Trust but is part of this NT managed area.
Open 10:00 - 16:00 every day.
Well positioned for a stop halfway if you're running from Wray Castle or further up the western shore. Alternatively get the ferry to here and run a loop from here, ending or starting at the cafe.

Claife Viewing Station and Courtyard

Highlight • Historical Site

Unfortunately our bikes had been on the back of the car when rear ended at speed by another car.

However we needed fresh air something to take our minds of this incident
We head towards Wray Castle after sailing across the lake. Well worth the trek with lots to see.
