Loweswater

Highlight • Viewpoint

A calm lake hidden in a forested valley, Loweswater is a beautiful stretch of water which is often overlooked by Lake District visitors. Owned by the National Trust, Loweswater is the only lake in the Lake District that drains towards the center of Lakeland. Keep a look out for rare red squirrels who have made their home amongst the coniferous surrounding the peaceful waters.

Buttermere Village

Highlight • Viewpoint

Buttermere is an achingly beautiful village in the western Lake District. Situated between Crummock Water and Buttermere and sitting in the shadow of many superb fells, the permutations for walks are many and varied. It caters for hikers very well, with two pubs, a couple of cafes, a youth hostel, a campsite and holiday cottages.

Its beauty is such that, despite its remote location, it is immensely popular with families, walkers and hikers. The roads around the village are notoriously narrow and bendy and jams are common. Try to avoid peak times and public holidays to get the most out of the place.

A market town since 1276, Keswick hosts a market on Saturday and Thursdays near Moot Hall, the Tourist Information Centre. At the layby there's a fabulous view of Bassenthwaite Lake, the fourth-largest among the lakes in the Lake District.

The River Derwent serves as both its primary inflow and outflow, ultimately emptying into the Irish Sea at Workington.

Whinlatter Pass

Highlight • Climb

Winding its way through Thornthwaite Forest with views over Lorton Valley and Bassenthwaite Lake, Whinlatter Pass is one of the most beautiful areas of the Lake District. At the top of the pass, you will find Whinlatter Forest Visitor Center which has information about osprey birds, a gift shop and restaurant. Standing at 317 meters (1043 feet) the climb is much more gradual than many other passes in the Lake District.
