Lakeside Pier and Steam Railway, Lake Windermere

Highlight • Rest Area

You could say that Lakeside is mainly the extravagant but really welcoming hotel, the historic steam railway journey into the Leven Valley (lakesiderailway.co.uk/about-lakeside-haverthwaite ), as well as the pier and boat terminal to get across Lake Windermere. It's popular with day-trippers and you can't blame them as it's such an idyllic part of the lake.

Oscar's Café

Highlight • Cafe

Grab an ice cream or coffee at Oscar's Cafe perched on the south western shore of Windermere. The menu is quite limited but it's a lovely location overlooking the lake. It gets very busy in the summer.

Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway

Highlight • Structure

Established in 1973, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway is a family-run business.

Steam engines pull 1950s carriages through the scenic Leven Valley to Lakeside Station, where you can connect with Windermere Lake Cruises.

West Windermere Way

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The West Windermere Way runs alongside the Lakeside steam railway track, crossing bridges and winding towards Newby Bridge.

The path is made of hard-packed gravel and tarmac, making it suitable for all types of bikes. It features several gates, all wide enough for trailers and wheelchair users.

Newby Bridge is a hamlet situated on the banks of River Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Historically part of Lancashire, it takes its name from the five-arched stone bridge built across the river in 1651. Within the hamlet, you find accommodation and food and drink. There is a stop on Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway here, too.

Newby Bridge Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Formerly part of Lancashire, Newby Bridge is a quaint village nestled along the banks of the River Leven, situated at the southern end of Lake Windermere.

Its name is derived from the distinguished five-arched stone bridge, constructed across the river in the year 1651.

There's a curved weir just below Newby Bridge which controls the amount of water flowing into River Leven from Lake Windermere.
