Beer Quarry Caves

Highlight • Cave

Beer Quarry Caves is a man-made limestone underground complex located about a mile west of the village of Beer, Devon, and the main source in England for beer stone. The tunnels resulted from 2,000 years of quarrying beer stone, which was particularly favoured for cathedral and church features such as door and window surrounds because of its colour and workability for carving. Stone from the quarry was used in the construction of several of southern England's ancient cathedrals and a number of other important buildings as well as for many town and village churches, and for some buildings in the United States.

Branscombe Forge

Highlight • Structure

They say that Branscombe Forge in Devon is the oldest thatched working forge in the country, which is quite something. You think – blacksmiths have worked here for over 400 years, and its currently run by a third generation blacksmith. The essential fabric of the building probably hasn’t changed all that much in that time – still the thick stone rubble walls, the low heavy thatch, and the open shelter at the front where the blacksmiths would have shod the horses back in the day.

St Winifred's Church, Branscombe

Highlight • Historical Site

St Winifred's Church is a Church of England church in Branscombe, Devon, England. The church is dedicated to St Winifred, a Welsh saint. It is one of Devon's oldest and most architecturally significant parish churches. The church probably dates from about 995, but there are only records of the vicars from the thirteenth century onwards. There is some archaeological evidence that an earlier Saxon church stood on the site.
Castle-like church!

This scenic lane in the village of Branscombe runs along a spectacular valley, dotted with pretty cottages, a cosy pub, an ancient church and a forge.
