RAF Harrowbeer Airfield

Highlight • Natural

Once an RAF airfield, Harrowbeer is now open heathland with pockets of pretty woodland. The West Devon Way and Drake's Trail long-distance paths both cross Harrowbeer and you'll likely seen ponies grazing freely.

Harrowbeer sits on the edge of Yelverton and has plenty of car parks around it. The town itself has a bakery and small shops and is a good base for walks in the area.

Abbey Bridge and Weir

Highlight • Historical Site

This gorgeous 18th-century bridge is one of several in the heart of Tavistock but is perhaps the prettiest. The River Tavy rushes underneath to pass down the weir, creating a series of little waterfalls in lush surroundings.

The bridge features both on the Dartmoor Way cycle route and National Cycle Network Route 27.

Pannier Market

Highlight • Structure

Historic covered market, in beautifully restored building. Great for browsing, all sorts on offer, good when the weather's wet (which is fairly frequent 😉).

Tavistock Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

There's a great permanent exhibition in here - good social history. Free, and well worth a visit.

Grenofen Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Great walk, the footpath from the top of brook lane/Rix hill is not well used, just follow the hedgeline!

Gem Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Gem Bridge towers 78 feet (24 m) above the River Walkham, affording wonderful views over the valley below. Until 1965, the original Walkham Viaduct would have stood here. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was demolished after the closure of the railway.

It's a wonderful experience to cycle over the bridge, especially in autumn when the trees are painted red.

This is an exciting section of the glorious 21-mile Drake's Trail cycling path that runs through Dartmoor.

You will pass through enchanting forestry featuring seasonal bluebells and over Magpie Viaduct, where you'll be afforded some wonderful birds-eye views of the surrounding landscape.
