Penrose Estate

Highlight • Forest

On Saturday mornings, Penrose becomes the venue of West Cornwall's Parkrun with around 200 runners each week completing the 5km course. The running route follows the old Victorian carriageway through woodland and parkland with views of Loe Pool and beyond. At that time it is very busy.

Porthleven Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

A visit to the port of Porthleven is especially worthwhile in the early morning hours. Especially in the spring you have the chance to be completely alone and to watch the boats close in the fog. If it gets a bit rougher, even surfers around the pier romp about. The waves then pile up so tight that you can plunge into Brett (and Wetsuite!). Who likes himself.

Loe Bar Crossing

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Loe Bar is a shingle bar that separates Loe, the largest natural freshwater lake in Cornwall, from the sea.

The beach here is really dangerous, with powerful waves and hidden currents, so make sure you don't swim here.

The bridleway actually crosses the bar here, but it's a long push as it's nearly impossible to ride over. Take off your shoes for a shingle foot massage!

14.3 km

This is a fabulous coastal track through the open golf course that's best enjoyed on a gravel bike or mountain bike, as it gets pretty rocky and sandy as you climb up, away from the sea.

You're flanked by high banks laden with wildflowers, which also help to break the wind on rougher days!

Poldhu Cove

Highlight • Beach

Poldhu is a lovely sandy beach popular with all kinds of beach goers, from families to surfers. It is also known as 'Black Pool', the English translation of the Cornish 'Poldhu'.

There is a beach cafe and a shop here as well as public toilets.

Cadgwith

Highlight • Settlement

Cadgwith is a small fishing village forgotten by the 21st century, situated on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Fishermen still push their boats up the beach to catch shellfish and wet fish when the weather permits.
