The old Cottbus electricity works came into being after the town mills at Cottbuser Mühlengraben were destroyed in a fire in 1882. One wanted to use the hydropower of the trench to generate electricity in the future, so that a tram could be powered. As a result, what was once the most modern power station in the Mark Brandenburg was built from 1901 to 1903. Equipped with water turbines, steam engines and boiler systems, it generated electricity using the water power of the town mill. The plant went into operation on April 27, 1903, supplying the new tram and 138 house connections with around 800,000 kWh of direct current. The plant's turbines ran regularly until 1968, before it was replaced by large-scale coal-based power plants. After the fall of the Wall, the building was temporarily used as a large disco.
The Wilhelmsmühle was built in 1836 as a fulling mill for cloth. After 1856 the fulling mill was converted into a grinding mill. At that time it was named "Wilhelmsmühle" after its owner. In 1876 an oil mill was added to the east gable end. At the time it was built, the fulling mill was the largest and first massive mill in the city. The mill was in operation for around one hundred years, until it was shut down in 1941 , since 1952 the house has been used as a kindergarten and youth club.
