Sparkasse Bridge on the Wall Walk

Highlight • Bridge

The Sparkassabrücke in Hartberg is a really beautiful piece of history, right in the middle of our lovely old town. It used to be part of the old defensive structure, the Wehrgang, and connects the old town directly with the area by the Sparkasse. The bridge is an important component of the medieval city wall, where you can really feel what it was like back then. Right by the bridge is the Sparkassen-Parkdeck in Alleegasse – a great starting point if you want to explore the city. From there, you can stroll comfortably through the alleys and discover the many exciting corners that make Hartberg so special. For anyone who likes to hike and is interested in history, the Sparkassabrücke is a real highlight.

Schölbinger Tower

Highlight • Monument

The circular tower at the eastern end of the city wall had to be preserved by the residents of Schölbing, who in return did not have to pay a toll when entering the city.

Well, here we are, sitting comfortably on the bench, gazing out over the lake and letting ourselves be enchanted by its beauty. The sun is shining, and the waves are lapping gently in the distance, while the little dances on the water glitter, as if the sky above had scattered its most beautiful stars.

Just look at how the vibrant colors swirl. There are yellow ducks, rocking to the rhythm of the waves, and a few blue fish, nimbly dancing around the swans' legs. And the wind is rustling through the trees, as if whispering in our ears: "Take a little rest!"

The flowers on the shore are blooming in the wildest colors of red, purple, and orange. It's as if nature itself has taken a paintbrush and painted everything with a joyful stroke. It seems to me as if the whole world has stood still for a moment, and only this spectacle matters.

Sitting here and watching, you forget the worries of everyday life. Every little glimmer on the water's surface tells its own story. It's amazing how much joy nature can bring to present itself. So let's stay here a while longer and enjoy life to the fullest. Cheers to the beauty that surrounds us!

St. Roch’s Column

Highlight • Monument

In Hartberg, where the stories of the past often linger within the ancient walls, stands a column built not only of stone, but also of profound faith and gratitude. In the autumn of 1679, the plague brought much misfortune to our town, claiming 238 lives. It was a terrible time, and the couple who commissioned this column knew that their health was a gift they owed to Saint Rosalia and Saint Roch.

With unwavering faith, they vowed to erect a column to express their gratitude and hope should fate be kind to them. The column's base depicts the Coronation of the Virgin by the Holy Trinity, an image that promises comfort and protection. In the lower left corner, we see the donor couple, depicted in miniature, underscoring their humility in the face of great challenges and losses.

At the very top sits Saint Roch, the patron saint against the plague, a wanderer accompanied by a faithful dog. He points to his own plague boil, a sign of his suffering, but also of his triumph. The weathered figure of Saint Rosalia at the base reminds us that faith is strong, even when the world around us is crumbling. The stone base on the back might even be a reference to the leather goods that the donor couple once produced or sold. Thus, the column remains a living testament to faith, loss, and hardship endured in Hartberg's history.

Today, this flat moor is the last large wetland in East Styria, which is why it is also designated as a European protected area. It is a natural recreation area and rest area for numerous plant and animal species and is freely accessible. Driving through here is simply something to enjoy.
