View of Ortenstein Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

In Domleschg, one of the regions in Switzerland with the most castles, the castle of Ortenstein rises imposingly on a rock. Surrounded by an impressive mountain backdrop, the result is a harmonious and romantic overall picture.

There is speculation as to when exactly the castle complex was built. It is assumed that the foundation stone was laid in the 13th century. Today, Ortenstein is privately owned.

Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary, Rhäzüns
The present-day landscape of Rhäzüns is largely shaped by the Catholic parish church of Nossadunna, located in the center of the village. The church tower rises high above the rooftops and is a landmark visible from afar.
Although consecrated in 1701, the Baroque sacred building did not become a parish church until 1777.
The floor plan shows an octagonal central structure with two side niches and a polygonal choir loft extended to the north. The tower is inserted into the eastern choir shoulder, and the sacristy is located in the western one.
The parish of Rhäzüns always celebrates the patronal feast of the parish church of the Nativity of Mary on the first Sunday in September. However, if September 8th falls on a Sunday, the Solemnity is celebrated on September 8th. Mass begins at 10:00 a.m.
All churches are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Feldis Village

Highlight • Settlement

Feldis/Veulden
Feldis/Veulden (German and officially Feldis until 1943, Romansh Veulden) is a village that belongs to the political municipality of Domleschg
Feldis was first mentioned in documents at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century, the lords of Rietberg received the tithe. In 1527, the villagers bought their freedom, and in 1583 they accepted the Reformation. A fire destroyed almost the entire village in 1774. Until 1851, Feldis was a neighborhood of the Ortenstein judicial community and then became an independent community. A road was built between 1901 and 1904, and a cable car opened in 1958.
On January 1, 2009, the previously independent Feldis/Veulden merged with Scheid, Trans and Tumegl/Tomils to form the municipality of Tomils. Since January 1, 2015, following the merger of Almens, Paspels, Pratval, Rodels and Tomils, it has belonged to the new municipality of Domleschg and is thus a fraction of Domleschg.

Tomils

Highlight • Settlement

The pretty town of Tomils, which belongs to the municipality of Domleschg, has just 380 inhabitants. The castle of Ortenstein is very close by, but it is not open to the public.
