Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy (Franciscan Church), Maribor

Highlight • Religious Site

The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy is one of seven basilicas in Slovenia and was the first church with this title in Austria-Hungary in 1906. It is the home church of the Maribor Franciscan monastery. The current church and monastery were built between 1892 and 1900 in neo-Romanesque style and stand on the site of the former Capuchin church, which was built in the 17th century at the request of Count Jakob Khiesl of Maribor. The façade is decorated with two 58-meter-high bell towers, topped with a peaked roof and three-meter-high gilded crosses. The church has three entrances decorated with stone carvings. The most richly decorated is the main portal with a mosaic in the lunette depicting the Annunciation of Mary.

In the middle of the main square stands the Marian sign (plague sign), which was erected in 1743 on the site of the older plague sign from 1681. It was made by Jožef Straub on behalf of the citizens of Maribor as a thank you for the end of the plague in the city.

The town hall or Rotovž was built in 1515. It received its current Renaissance form between 1563 and 1565. The town, which dates back to a Markburg or Marchburg first mentioned in 1164 (Mark or March are old German terms for "border"), today has almost 100,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city in Slovenia.

Maribor Castle

Highlight • Castle

Maribor's City Castle on the north-eastern edge of the old town is the most beautiful and largest building in the city. Today it houses the Regional Museum. The castle, on the site of the castle begun in 1478 by Emperor Frederick III, was built from 1655 by Count Brandis and his successors and was continuously expanded until 1843. The clock tower dates from 1780. The castle was once the strongest fortress in the city, equipped with two courtyards, of which the one intended for the riding school is very large. The portal to the castle square is decorated with a large stone lion.

The name of the monument "Spomenik NOB" refers to the Narodnoosvobodilni boj (abbreviation NOB). This is the name given to the resistance of the people of Yugoslavia against the occupiers during the Second World War in the years 1941-1945. The leading role in organizing the uprising was played by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) under the leadership of Josip Broz-Tito.

St. John the Baptist Cathedral (Maribor)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Stolna cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika) is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. The first documented mention of a church on this site dates back to 1248, but there must have been a Christian church nearby even before that, probably from 1096. The cathedral is built from blocks of grey and yellowish Slovenian Gorica sandstone. The core of the church is Romanesque, and additions and alterations followed in Gothic, Baroque and 20th century architecture. The bell tower was built between 1623 and 1624. The church became a cathedral on September 4, 1859, when the bishop's seat was moved to Maribor.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia. Very badly damaged in WWII. What remains of the old substance is gradually being restored. The oldest grapevine 🍇 at least in Europe, at around 400 years old, right on the Drau is at home here. Clear city with charm 🤩

I couldn't just drive past a city as steeped in history as Maribor. I immediately noticed how many young people are out and about here. Maribor is a lively city with a very lively scene in the middle of the ancient walls. The decision has already been made: I'm going to take a closer look at this Slovenian metropolis.
