Via Crucis to Madonna del Sasso

Highlight (Segment) • Religious Site

Way of the Cross Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso
If you walk up the Stations of the Cross from Locarno, you need about half an hour. There is also the option of taking the funicular from Locarno train station, which runs from there every 15 minutes to the Madonna del Sasso. Above is the church building, surrounded by palm trees and oleanders. Upon entering the interior of the church, one immediately notices that the interior has been preserved in its original state, as can be seen e.g. can be recognized by an altarpiece of the Madonna from 1480. Many of the more than 400-year-old figures have also been preserved in the Madonna del Sasso. The interior of the church with a low ceiling is bathed in a mystical light. The best way to enjoy the power of this magical place is to sit down. The gaze wanders involuntarily to the holy mother with her child. The votive tablets and paintings depicting the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt are also very impressive.

Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso

Highlight • Religious Site

Madonna del Sasso - the most famous pilgrimage church in Italian-speaking Switzerland was built around 1485 on the occasion of the Franciscan brother Frá Bartolomeo. He had an apparition of Our Lady at this place high above Lake Maggiore and wanted to build a place of worship at the same place. In addition, further chapels and a Church of the Annunciation were built further below. From this Church of the Annunciation a Way of the Cross leads up the Via Crucis with 2 Way of the Cross chapels to the Madonna del Sasso.

These trails are pleasant to run. This connects the Contra area to Madonna del Sasso, a priceless view of Lake Maggiore as it is always on high ground.

Madonna del Sasso

Highlight • Religious Site

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso
Place of pilgrimage with church, Sacro Monte and monastery above Locarno in the municipality of Orselina on a partially terraced rocky outcrop. Madonna del Sasso was founded by the Franciscan Bartolomeo Piatti from Ivrea on the spot where, according to legend, Our Lady appeared to him in 1480. A short time later, the place became a destination for pilgrimages, and thanks to numerous donations, the construction of the pilgrimage site could be tackled. In 1487 the chapels of Santa Maria Avvocata and Pietà were consecrated (the latter later integrated into the monastery), in 1502 the church of Santa Maria Annunziata at the foot of Sacro Monte in the municipality of Muralto. The upper church of Santa Maria Assunta, called Madonna del Sasso, consecrated in 1616, probably arose from an extension of the Avvocata chapel. The monastery, which developed from the "Casa del Padre" that was built in the 15th century, has been expanded and rebuilt several times. The Sacro Monte, built in the 17th century according to the Lombard model, has only partially survived.
