Grande Dixence Dam

Highlight • Monument

With a height of 285 meters, the Grande Dixence gravity dam was the highest dam in the world until 1980. In 1980 it was surpassed by the Nurek Dam, which was the highest wall in the USSR (now Tajikistan) until 2013, with a height of 300 m. Two walls in China were completed in 2010 and 2014; the 292 m high Xiaowan Dam and Jinping I with 305 meters. Two of these barrier structures are rockfill dams, one an arch dam, which means that the Grande Dixence will remain the tallest gravity dam in the world.

At the base, the Grande Dixence is 200 meters thick and the length of the crest is 695 meters. More than 6 million m³ of concrete were used during construction, the weight of the wall is around 15 million tons. Over 30 km of tunnels have been dug inside the wall for maintenance and control.

A cable car runs from the foot of the dam to the crown. The 640 m long cable car from 1964 is designed as an aerial tramway with cabins for 15 people.
Lake: The Lac des Dix is about 5.3 km long, about 600 meters wide on average and a maximum depth of 227 m. Its area, which varies with the filling level, is approximately 4 km². The capacity is around 400 million m³. The reservoir is filled with water through a network of intake tunnels and pumping stations, which comes from the 75 water intakes in the 375 km² catchment area, which includes 35 glaciers. The annual water volume is an average of 500 million m³, most of which occurs in summer.(...from Wiki)
