Dundrum

Highlight • Settlement

Dundrum is a quiet village located approximately 14 kilometres (9 mi) northwest of Cashel at the junction of the R505 and R661 roads, featuring the notable Dundrum House Hotel and Golf Course with its distinctive avenue lined by mature lime trees. The village lies along the historic Dublin to Cork railway line, which passes through the area though the railway station closed in 1976, and today it serves as a charming base for exploring the surrounding countryside and cultural heritage of the Tipperary region.

Holycross Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Holycross Abbey was founded in 1182 AD by Dónal Mór Ó Briain, King of Limerick and reconstructed between 1400-1450 with the abbey being dissolved in 1540. It is a stunning building in very good condition.

The village also has a popular local pub should you fancy a refreshment.

The Sheep Pasture Walk is the most scenic and shortest route from the Rock of Cashel to Hore Abbey. You can enjoy a fantastic view of both highlights and have the sheep around you. There are crossings at the fence to get over the fence that the sheep cannot go through.

Hore Abbey & Rock of Cashel

Highlight • Historical Site

To the west of this point you can see Hore Abbey, Irelands last medieval Cistercian monastery which was founded in 1272. The Abbey was originally a Benedictine monastery, however in 1272 the archbishop of Cashel expelled the monks and Cistercians arrived from Mellifont Abbey.

Today you can see the stunning remains of the church and parts of the east range.

To the east you can see the majestic Rock of Cashel. Sitting on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, is an impressive cluster of medieval buildings. This includes a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

The surviving buildings are remarkable. Cormac's Chapel has the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland.

Both of these historic sites can be views from the road. If you would like to get a tour you should book on:
