Thorpeness Meare

Highlight • Lake

Thorpeness Meare is a boating lake like no other. The lake with its islands and surrounds covers around sixty acres in total, with over forty acres of water.

Reassuringly, nowhere in the lake is more than 3ft deep, so it provides a very safe boating environment.

The islands were named by J.M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan.

Thorpeness Meare Shop and Tearooms

Highlight • Restaurant

The little cafe by the pond is really quirky and the food is great. We love it especially in the colder months when you need warming up.

The House in the Clouds

Highlight • Monument

The House in the Clouds is an old water tower built in 1923. It originally pumped water from the nearby mill and was later used for water storage only. In 1977, it was sold to private ownership and the renovation and change of use commenced.

Today, this extraordinary building serves as a rather unique holiday home.

Aldeburgh Beach

Highlight • Beach

Aldeburgh beach is more than just the seaside. Aside from the long sand and shingle bay, there is plenty more. A Norman Church and a windmill plus a Martello Tower. You can even buy freshly caught fish from the fishermen's huts.

Aldeburgh Moot Hall and War Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

Two fab-looking old buildings on the seafront of Aldeburgh, I only walked by and did not stop.

Love seeing these types of structure, not one part of them look straight, a DIY'ers nightmare.

South Beach, Aldeburgh

Highlight • Beach

The sand and shingle of South Beach backs on to the pretty seaside town of Aldeburgh.

Along the beach front are a number of quirky historic buildings, including the 400 year old Moot Hall, a Martello tower and a converted windmill.

Composer Benjamin Britten is strongly linked with the town and there is a monument to him on the beach - the Scallop.

6.51 km

Installed in 2003, the Scallop is a beautiful piece of art that reflects the coastal light wonderfully. It was sculpted by local artist Maggi Hambling in memory of the composer Benjamin Britten. He took daily walks along the sea during the many years he lived in Aldeburgh. The Scallop has faced a fair amount of local opposition due to its prominent position on the otherwise undisturbed bay.
