This easy 10.0-mile (16.1 km) route, with a gentle 289 feet (88 metres) of elevation gain, takes just under an hour to complete, making it one of the most popular and accessible cycling routes for all skill levels.
What to expect on Donkey Beach – Kapaa Bike Path loop from Kapaa
This path, formally known as Ke Ala Hele Makālae, hugs the ocean, offering continuous coastal views with turquoise waves and sandy beaches. You'll cycle past towering palm trees and lush landscapes, often spotting wildlife like monk seals or turtles. The route is predominantly paved, making for a smooth ride, though be aware of a short, unpaved section of about 800 feet between the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort and the Kauai Coast Resort where you might need to walk your bike through sand and grass. Highlights include the secluded Donkey Beach at the northern end, the historic Pineapple Dump Pier, and sweeping views of Kapaa Town and rolling mountains.
