Description
If you're looking for a big waterfall payoff without a huge time commitment, the Burgess Falls State Park – Burgess Falls loop from Falling Water Cascades hiking route is an excellent choice. This easy 1.4-mile (2.3 km) loop, with just 74 feet (22 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 36 minutes, making it perfect for a quick, scenic outing that delivers impressive natural features.
What to expect on Burgess Falls State Park – Burgess Falls loop from Falling Water Cascades
The journey begins near Falling Water Cascades, where you'll follow the River Trail, a path of rugged dirt with stairs that descends towards the river. Be mindful of sections where the trail drops off, especially with kids. The real reward is the progression of four impressive waterfalls: the 20-foot Falling Water Cascades, the 30-foot Little Falls, the 80-foot Middle Falls, and finally, the magnificent 136-foot Burgess Falls. While the state park officially rates the River Trail as difficult due to its elevation changes and ruggedness, many find this loop more easy-to-moderate, especially if you take your time. The stairs are the most strenuous part, but the views are worth the effort.
Planning your visit
The park is a popular destination, so arriving early is always a good idea, especially on weekends, to secure parking. The trail can become muddy after rain, so check the Burgess Falls State Park weather conditions before you go and wear appropriate footwear. Note that the stairs to the base of Burgess Falls were destroyed by a flood and have not been replaced, so the base is now only accessible by kayak from Center Hill Lake.
