Description
If you're looking for Ogden's signature hike, the Waterfall loop from Ogden High School delivers a rewarding experience. This moderate hiking route covers 4.9 miles (7.8 km) with 1257 feet (383 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 40 minutes. It's a fantastic choice for those wanting a scenic workout close to town, culminating in an impressive 200-foot waterfall.
What to expect on Waterfall loop from Ogden High School
The journey begins on a wide, sandy path with a gradual incline, making the first half-mile or so quite accessible, even for young children. However, don't be fooled; after crossing a wooden bridge, the trail narrows significantly and becomes a steep, rocky ascent. The final push to the impressive 200-foot waterfall involves scrambling over loose rocks, especially the last 100 meters, so wear closed-toe shoes and consider hiking poles. You'll be treated to views of Ogden below as you climb, and the roar of the waterfall grows louder as you approach.
Planning your visit
The trail is easily accessed from the 29th Street Trailhead, conveniently located near Ogden High School. Parking can get busy, especially on spring and summer weekends when hundreds of hikers visit. The best time to experience the full force of the 200-foot waterfall is in spring with snowmelt and rain, though winter offers a unique "crenellated curtain of white ice" if you're prepared for icy conditions. Remember to be respectful as parts of the trail cross private property owned by the TR Guest Ranch; pack out all trash and pick up after dogs.
