Groote or Old Sint-Albertpolder

Highlight • Historical Site

This polder was diked in 1612. At this location you can realize how man reclaimed land from the sea in the Middle Ages.

Historical interpretation:
The Groote or Oude Sint-Albertpolder is a polder north of Sas van Gent, belonging to the Polders of Albert and Isabella, in the Dutch province of Zeeland.

In 1610, Archduke Albertus of Austria granted permission to dike the salt marshes in the Assenede district. The polder was completed in 1612 and was named after the archduke. Later the prefix Sint- was added.

It was one of the first polders to be parceled out according to a rectangular plan.

When the border between Staats-Vlaanderen and the Southern Netherlands was established in 1664, 483 hectares were located in Staats-Vlaanderen and 480 hectares in the Southern Netherlands.

In 1808, the northern part of the polder was flooded, causing the loss of 20 hectares of the Dutch part. Today that is 463 hectares.

The Grote Kilkreek

Highlight • Lake

Grote and Kleine Kilkreek are an ideal stop for a picnic or to take a rest. These are remnants of soil washed away as a result of medieval storms that broke the dikes. The dikes were restored and the creeks are silent witnesses in the landscape.
Don't forget your binoculars because you can spot many water birds here.

View of De Gezusterkreken

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Gezusterskreken form a creek system in the north of the East Flemish municipality of Assenede in the Meetjesland (Meetjeslands creek area).

The Gezusterskreeks consist of the Grote Kil and the Kleine Kil, which are in line with each other but are separated by a dam, over which the Gezustersstraat runs. The creeks are located in the Sint-Albertpolder, which was diked in 1612, during which the Scheurhoekdijk was constructed. In 1663 and again in 1690, the Sint-Pieterspolder was diked, causing the Scheurhoekdijk to lose its function as a primary sea defense. The current Belgian-Dutch border here follows the route of the Scheurhoekdijk. The area is European protected as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Polders'

Molenkreek

Highlight • Lake

The Molenkreek is the northernmost creek of the Meetjesland, it is located in Sint-Margriete. Despite the long time since there was still a connection with the Western Scheldt, there is still an increased salt content in both the water and the banks. This affects the vegetation. Connoisseurs recognize plants here that also occur in the Zwin, although there is no longer any connection with the sea here. The low water level, at some times, also attracts waders. The Molenkreek was restored to its natural state in 2012 and is managed by Natuurpunt Meetjesland. The area is European protected as part of Natura 2000 area 'Polders'.

Hollandersgatkreek

Highlight • Lake

The Hollandersgatkreek is a creek southwest of the village of Sint-Margriete, which belongs to the East Flemish municipality of Sint-Laureins.

The Hollandersgatkreek is an extension of the Blokkreek and is separated from it by a dam. The creek is a remnant of the Hollandersgat that emerged after the All Saints Flood of 1570 and the subsequent inundations by the Geuzen.

The Hollandersgatkreek is connected to the Kruiskreek, which is located on Dutch territory and is connected to the Passageule via a complicated creek system.

The area is European protected as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Polders'
