The Sonian Forest

Highlight • Forest

Groenendaal station is also our gateway to the Sonian Forest. You can't miss it, the world's largest beech trees are here. Their trunks have diameters of up to 160 centimeters and some peaks up to 50 meters high in the air. They are often even more than two centuries old. Parts of this 'primeval forest' have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the magical Hallerbos, which is covered every spring with a purple blanket of wild bluebells and the Meerdaalwoud-Dijle Valley, it is part of the Brabantse Wouden National Park. A valuable walking tip!

Cornelius Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Saint Cornelius Chapel on the Kloosterweg was built at the end of the 19th century and the saint was invoked against paralysis and falling disease. Pope Cornelius, who died as a martyr in 253, was told to heal a woman of paralysis. He was also venerated in the priory. The chapel stands between three lime trees. The place was called 'Lindekensboom' in 1688.
