View of the Pegnitz River in Lauf

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have a wonderful view of the weir and the Pegnitz. This has a length of about 113 km.
The river name goes back to the name "Paginza" from 889 and is seen as a derivative of "flowing water".
The source is located in the city of Pegnitz.
North of the inner city of Fürth, the Pegnitz merges with the Rednitz to form the Regnitz.

Medieval city gate at the market in Lauf, with the inn behind it, it looks like it has fallen out of time. 👌😎

St. John's Church, Lauf an der Pegnitz

Highlight • Religious Site

The Johanniskirche (rarely also St. John's Church) is the largest church in the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz. The Protestant parish church stands at the west end of the market square and is on the site of a chapel built in 1275. After the Sankt Leonhard hospital church was destroyed, it became a Protestant parish church. The current building was built between 1350 and 1370.

The Laufer sculptor Balthasar Götz created the altar with eight interchangeable images in the second half of the 17th century. The organ is a work by Hoffmann Orgelbau from 1990 with 24 registers on two manuals and pedal using a baroque main work prospectus from 1667 by Christoph Rappold and a Rückpositiv prospectus from 1700 by Johann Adam Brandenstein.[1]

On the church tower is the two-story apartment of the town tower keeper, who worked from there as a fire watchman and town musician with his journeymen until 1931. There is another room above the apartment, the use of which is not known.

In addition to Sunday services, the church also hosts weddings, prayer services and concerts. Special regular events include, on the one hand, the Lenten sermons during Lent and, on the other hand, organ music during market time in the summer.

From here you basically start exploring the Bitterbach Gorge. When it is wet, there is of course a slight risk of slipping along the entire route.
