Kandel Ascent

Highlight • Climb

The climb from Waldkirch to the 1,204-meter-high Kandelsattel not only offers a respectable height difference of a good 900 meters, but the route also offers an almost Alpine flair with its winding and partly steep course. One of the most beautiful climbs in the Black Forest. Currently (12/2022) the lower half has been newly asphalted, but the upper half is in poor condition. Which doesn't matter on the way up, but requires caution on a possible descent and significantly reduces the fun.

Kandel Serpentines

Highlight • Climb

One of the sporting highlights in the Black Forest is the north-west ascent to the Kandel from Waldkirch. Here you climb almost 1,000 meters over a distance of 12 kilometers. The asphalt isn't quite as good anymore, but that doesn't bother you so much uphill - with up to 18% it doesn't roll that well here anyway.

Gaisfelsenhütte

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Gaisfelsenhütte (Gaisfelsen Hut) is located near the Gaisfelsen rock formation on the L186 access road to the Kandelberg mountain, at an altitude of 780 meters below the Kandel summit. From here, there is a beautiful view of the Breisgau Basin and the Rhine Valley, and on a clear day, as far as the Vosges Mountains.

The Gaisenfelsenhütte was built in 1927 and is maintained by the Friends of Nature association in Waldkirch.

Kandel Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Kandel offers an ascent of quite alpine quality with the starting point in Waldkirch. A good 900 meters in altitude and up to 13% incline on a narrow mountain road demand one or the other drop of sweat. You will be rewarded with a great view from the high point at 1,200 meters down into the Elztal, the Rhine plain, across to the Vosges and, with good visibility, even to the Alps in the south.

The route from Waldkirch is also recommended for the ascent because of the quality of the roads. Currently (01/2022) it has numerous potholes and longitudinal cracks in the upper area, which make the descent quite rough. Renovation measures were in progress in 2019 and 2020 and so the first almost 350 meters in altitude and 3.6 kilometers from Waldkirch are smooth and freshly asphalted again. In general, the route is much wider in the direction of St. Peter/Glottertal, but here too the ravages of time are gnawing, and in some sections you have to be careful on the descent.

Kandel Ascent and Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The approach from the direction of Glottertal / St.Peter on the Kandel is the less beautiful variant, the approach from Waldkirch is clearly recommended. This has an almost alpine flair and the rather old road doesn't bother you uphill, it is rather shocking for the descent.
But the Glottertal run has also seen better days, in sections there are now also quite rough frost breaks and longitudinal cracks here (04/2021) - so keep your eyes open on the run!

Glotter Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

A descent through Glottertal is always worthwhile. The asphalt is good and you can just let it run and enjoy.

Vineyards above Glottertal

Highlight • Natural

The vineyards in the Glottertal, which lie above the village, are somewhat unusual for the Black Forest, but are therefore all the more interesting.

Glotter Valley

Highlight • Gorge

Probably the most famous valley in the area but not necessarily the most beautiful. In the lower part it is still quite flat towards St. Peter and then becomes a real uphill climb. Due to the large number of tourists, the traffic is usually quite heavy.
