Retzbach Historic Town Center

Highlight • Settlement

I was in Retzbach many, many years ago, when there was no surrounding road and all traffic flowed through Retzbach. The house facades were dark with soot from the exhaust fumes. That was not nice.
Today, many houses have been cleaned up again and contribute to a neat little village.

Würzburger Gate

Highlight • Monument

The gatehouse is at least partially the youngest preserved gatehouse. Marked with the year 1751 and the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Karl Philipp von Greifenklau, it is likely to have been renewed or rebuilt in place of the previous house.

The mayor's bill from 1604 and the municipal bill from 1723 indicate that a forge must originally have been attached to the gatehouse. Parts of the first and second floors had to be rebuilt in 1970 because a large US truck got stuck in the driveway in 1965 and tore heavy ashlar stones from both archways. The structure was so badly damaged that the gate passage had to be closed.

During the reconstruction, the community decided to set up a wine tasting room on the upper floor. This has been since ... at the Geiger jun. Leased and used for representative wine tastings.

Historic Old Town of Thüngersheim

Highlight • Historical Site

Thüngersheim is a municipality in the district of Würzburg in Lower Franconia. It is located on the Main and is strongly influenced by viticulture. With around 270 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the largest wine-growing communities in Franconia.

The place came into being during the first Frankish settlement phase between 530 and 700 AD. Thüngersheim was first mentioned in 1098. The first vines were planted in 1154. The completion of the parish church of St. Michael took place in 1614.
