Description
If you're an advanced mountain biker looking for a serious challenge, the Sheepherder Hill loop from Sheepherder is definitely worth your time. This difficult 7.5-mile (12.1 km) mountain biking route packs in 1415 feet (431 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 1 hour and 26 minutes to complete. It's an expert route designed for those who thrive on technical terrain and significant climbs, making it one of the more demanding Sheepherder Hill mountain biking routes.
What to expect on Sheepherder Hill loop from Sheepherder
This trail is a riot to ride for those with advanced mountain biking skills, offering a journey through narrow, undulating singletrack that snakes between Payson Canyon and Santaquin Canyon. You'll navigate varied terrain, from deep fir forests and aspens to sections opening into large fields and a forest fire burn area. Expect numerous rocks, roots, several creek crossings, and even a tricky off-camber rock feature. The trail's technical downhill sections, including berms, jumps, and mandatory gap jumps (earning it the nickname 'Stump Jumper' in parts), demand constant attention and skill, making it unsuitable for early-intermediates.
Planning your visit
The Sheepherder Hill mountain biking trailhead is easily accessible, but be prepared for a challenging ride. Due to open grazing, you might encounter cattle or their droppings directly on the trail, so stay alert. This route is best enjoyed when dry, as sections can become muddy and challenging after rain. Always check local conditions before heading out.
