Description
If you're looking for a high-reward, low-effort hike right from town, the Lower Cascade Falls loop from Ouray is an excellent choice. This easy hiking route covers 2.9 miles (4.7 km) with 574 feet (175 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 1 hour and 28 minutes to complete. It's perfect for families, casual hikers, or anyone wanting a quick dose of Ouray's natural beauty.
What to expect on Lower Cascade Falls loop from Ouray
The trail offers a delightful journey through a conifer forest, following Cascade Creek, with the main event being the impressive Lower Cascade Falls. You can get close enough to feel the spray from the 330-foot waterfall, especially during spring and early summer when the water flow is heaviest. While generally easy, expect some steep and rocky sections, particularly if you start from the Amphitheatre Picnic Area, which involves a significant climb on the return. Along the way, you'll catch continuous views of Ouray and the surrounding San Juan Mountains, including the prominent 11,475-foot Hayden Mountain. This dog-friendly trail is a fantastic way to experience Ouray's natural features.
Planning your visit
One of the best things about this trail is its accessibility directly from Ouray. You have two main access points: the lower trailhead at the east end of 8th Avenue, which offers a quicker route to the falls and has restrooms, or the upper trailhead near the Amphitheatre Picnic Area. For the most dramatic waterfall experience, plan your visit for spring or early summer when the water flow is at its peak. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but please keep them on a leash.
