Description
If you're looking for a high-reward, low-effort jogging route with some of the best views in West Virginia, the Endless Wall Trail loop from Fayette is an excellent choice. This easy 2.7-mile (4.4 km) route, with just 196 feet (60 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 32 minutes, making it one of the most popular routes in the New River Gorge National Park for a quick, scenic outing.
What to expect on Endless Wall Trail loop from Fayette
The trail starts with a leisurely, mostly level section from the Fern Creek trailhead, winding through lush hardwood forests and dense rhododendron thickets that sometimes form natural tunnels. As you progress, the terrain becomes more rugged, with rocky sections and roots underfoot, so pay attention to your footing, especially after rain when Fern Creek can be quite full. The real highlight is reaching the numerous vantage points, particularly the Diamond Point Overlook, which offers breathtaking vistas of the New River flowing nearly 1,000 feet below and the towering sandstone cliffs of the "Endless Wall." You might even catch glimpses of the iconic New River Gorge Bridge and spot rock climbers scaling the vertical walls. While rated easy, the varied terrain means it suits joggers who are comfortable navigating roots and rocks.
Planning your visit
Access the trail from the Fern Creek trailhead. Keep in mind that the Endless Wall Trail is often described as a "broken loop" or "semi-loop" between the Fern Creek and Nuttall Trailheads. To complete a full loop, you'll need to walk a short 0.5-mile section along Lansing-Edmond Road. No specific permits or fees are mentioned for this trail, but it's always wise to check the National Park Service website for the latest information before you go.
