The construction of the Große Straße as a parade route and central axis of the site was completed in 1939. It faces the medieval Imperial Castle in a north-westerly direction. Until 1964 it served as the runway for the U.S. Army, which operated DHC-2 "Beaver" fixed-wing aircraft and Sikorsky S-58 helicopters there.
