Sunset View from Sloan's Lake East Shore

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sloan's Lake is a man-made lake in Denver, Colorado, whose origins are somewhat mysterious. While it did not exist during the early settlement of the area in the mid-19th century, it likely formed between 1861 and 1863. Today, Sloan's Lake is a habitat for various wildlife, including birds like white pelicans and Canada geese, and mammals like muskrats and nutria. Penny Island, located in the lake's center, features an osprey nesting structure and is a popular spot for drone pilots. Sloan's Lake Park, the second-largest park in Denver and is the center of the neighborhood of the same name.

Tucker Gulch

Highlight • Gorge

Tucker Gulch, stretching for about eight miles, plays a significant role as a watershed running from east to west. It cuts through the prairie, situated roughly one mile north of Clear Creek Canyon, and runs parallel to it. The name "Tucker Gulch" is derived from Alfred Tucker, who ran a tollgate within the canyon entrance during the 1860s.

Cycling is not allowed here, so you'll have dismount and walk your bike.

Windy Saddle Park Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

This point offers amazing views of an open canyon (with a bathroom just in case). Many people drive up to this point, but they are missing the canyon hike on the way up. You can head back down from this point, or continue on to the much longer (and scenic) Lookout Mountain Trail.

Lookout Mountain

Highlight • Viewpoint

Lookout mountain is the go-to climb for cyclists all over the area. The climb starts off moderately steep, levels off mid way, then picks back up at the top. Traffic is generally light and most cars are courteous. Once you hit the top, you are treated with panoramic views of downtown Denver at the Buffalo Bill Memorial viewing platform.

Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Highlight • Historical Site

The Buffalo Bill Grave is perched atop Mt. Zion. Just behind the museum resides a viewing platform that offers near panoramic views as far as the eye can see. Many visitors park in the parking lot located steps away, or make the scenic journey starting on a nearby trailhead. If you are ever in Golden, this spot is unequivocally a place to visit.

Lookout Mountain Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Lookout Mountain is easily the most popular and scenic road within the Denver vicinity. The road is well paved and offers continuous views of mountains and the city. After you pass Windy Saddle Park, you break 7k feet of elevation and enter the evergreen trees. If it is a cold day, this is typically the coldest part of the climb and drops a few number of degrees. Cars are generally considerate going up the road, but cyclists also need to be considerate, so stay single file and be aware of your surroundings.
