Klevendeich Swing Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The swing bridge over the Pinnau was completed in 1887. As a cultural monument, it is now a listed building and is one of the two oldest swing bridges still in operation in Germany. The bridge keeper used to crank the bridge up and down with a handwheel to turn it sideways for shipping. Today this is done by an electric motor.

Castle Moat, Uetersen

Highlight • River

The moat in Uetersen is a historic body of water from the 12th century.

The moat used to flow around the former castle square of the monastery founder Heinrich II von Barmstede (approx. 1210–1240). The latter built two castles in and near Uetersen in the 12th century, where he later resided. He also donated the construction of the Uetersen monastery in 1234, which was under the sovereignty of the Archdiocese of Bremen. This same Heinrich II was one of the most important men under Adolf IV, he appeared in many countial documents of the time as one of the top signatories.

The former low castle was probably a main castle, which was surrounded by a wide moat (now popularly known as "moat") and a bailey or watchtower, which was also surrounded by a moat (bleaching ditch). [1 ] [2] The castle complex (moat) was mentioned for the first time around 1234 in a deed of gift from Heinrich II von Barmstede. Further mentions come in the Fundatio of the Uetersen monastery (founding history of the monastery from 1237) and the Otia Jersbecensia [3] (1738) of the royal. Danish Law firm and government and higher court lawyer Jürgen Grube.

Today's 8-10 meter wide moat leads to the monastery church along the Gustchen-Stolberg promenade up to 1818 Vorwerk (apartments for monastery staff, coach house and horse stables as well as two prisoner cells). There it flows through an entrance to the monastery and continues along a path shaded by old chestnuts to the city center of Uetersen.
