Ypres Canal

Highlight • River

beautiful cycle path along a route steeped in history
The Ypres Canal runs for 14 kilometers from Ypres to the Knokke Bridge, where the canal flows into the Yser. Even if the canal looks like it was drawn with a ruler: to the left and right of the bank you will find a landscape that cannot be squeezed into any geometric shapes.

Old towpaths lead you almost at water level, here you can encounter remarkable fauna and flora.

Knokkebrug Drawbridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Knokkebrug is located on the border of Diksmuide with Lo-Reninge and Houthulst, although the coat of arms of the latter municipality hangs on the railing. It owes its name to the Fort Knocke that the Spaniards built there in 1590 and that was once of great military importance. Today there is a cone-shaped shelter, a rest and information point for cyclists. The drawbridge is located at the confluence of the Yser with the Ieperlee Canal.

In the IJzer Tower you will find the Museum on the IJzer. It tells the story of the Belgian-German front during World War I through the stories of soldiers, refugees and civilians on both sides of the front.

From the top of the 84 meter high tower you have a wonderful panoramic view over Diksmuide and the Westhoek.

Yser Tower (IJzertoren)

Highlight • Monument

The first Yser Tower was inaugurated in 1930 as a memorial for the Flemish soldiers who lost their lives in the front region. During the Second World War the site became a backdrop for collaboration. The Yser Tower was detonated during an attack in 1946. A new tower was built from the ruins in 1965. The tower has housed a museum for several years now.

The renovated Museum aan de IJzer in the IJzertoren tells the story of the Belgian-German front during the First World War through the stories of soldiers, refugees and civilians on both sides of the front. The museum does not deliver a non-binding message, but a clear order: Never again war! In addition, the political consequences of this war, which culminate in the Flemish struggle for emancipation, are also explained. In addition to the view over the former Yser Front, you can also enjoy a beautiful panorama over Diksmuide and the Westhoek on top of the 84-meter-high tower.

Diksmuide Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The market of Diksmuide is a lively and historic place in the center of the city. On the Grote Markt in Diksmuide, merchants have been offering their merchandise at the weekly Monday market since the thirteenth century. Now there is also the farmer's market on Saturday afternoon, where local producers sell their delicious farm products in an atmospheric market.
Diksmuide is also known as the Butter City. The Boterhalle and the Boter- en Kaasfeesten on Whit Monday bear witness to this. The statue 'Het Manneke uit de Mane' is the symbol of Flemish humor that is guarded by the 'Orde van het Manneke', while the statue of General-Baron Jacques reminds us of the Battle of Diksmuide in 1914.
The center of Diksmuide received a thorough facelift. The aim of the project was to make the center of Diksmuide more attractive. The Grote Markt is now a pleasant square. The trees, benches and water elements make it really cozy.

Vredesmolen (Peace Mill) Klerken

Highlight • Monument

The Vredesmolen (also "Old mill", "Van Couillie's mill" or "Afgeschoten mill") is a former windmill in the Belgian village of Klerken (Houthulst). The former wooden grain and oil mill is located at the highest point of the village (43 meters) and was therefore used by the Germans as a lookout post during the First World War. It was captured by the Allies during the final offensive, but the Germans had already left the mill by an underground passage. The mill is a rare example of a ruined mill and became a protected monument on April 1, 1999. On the same date it also got its official name "Peace Mill".
