This lookout tower is in close proximity to the Markgrafensteinen. The tower is 45 meters high and offers you a fantastic view of the Scharmutzelsee, the Rauener mountains and even as far as Berlin when visibility is good.

The Bad Saarow train station is a really beautiful and well-kept train station in the well-known spa town on the Scharmutzelsee.

Bad Saarow Water Tower

Highlight • Monument

It was built in 1906 as a water tower and was decommissioned many years ago. The old water tank at the top of the tower, which could store fifty cubic meters of water, was demolished and the former Bad Saarow water and electricity works was closed.

Scharmützelsee

Highlight • Lake

The Scharmützelsee appears peaceful on this sunny late October day. Incidentally, it is not named after a brief military conflict, but rather takes its name from the Middle Low German corruption of the Old Sorbian word for buckthorn, Čremušn. Brandenburg's second largest lake is ten kilometers long, up to one and a half kilometers wide and a maximum of 29 meters deep.

The perfect place for a leisurely stroll along the lake. If you then take a look at the old mansions on the waterfront, you'll feel like you're in the Hamptons on Long Island - even if some of the houses still look a little abandoned.

The Egg House

Highlight • Monument

The "Egg House" from the late 1920s is a building sculpture by the Berlin architect Fritz Glantz. The former country house of the Jewish banker family Zeidler, also called "Villa Parolo" after the first names of the owners, stands on slightly rising ground with a wide view of the lake. The building was constructed using timber frame construction on the imposing base floor, which is clad in field stones. The front of the house, which opens onto the lake shore, is correspondingly striking. The country house was originally a weekend house. Today it is used as a holiday home.

Fontane Park, Bad Saarow

Highlight • Natural Monument

To mark the 200th anniversary of Fontane's birthday in 2019, sixteen panels with quotes from Theodor Fontane were erected on the peninsula covered in deciduous forest. The Berlin writer and journalist passed by here on his Easter hike through the Mark Brandenburg in 1881. The quotes were cut into panels made of Corten steel using laser technology and screwed onto concrete slabs. The highlight is a steel telescope entitled "View into Nothingness". It refers to a sentence by Fontane from 1881: "There is nothing in Saarow, I know that, and here in Pieskow there is nothing at all."

Great and Little Markgrafenstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

Here are the largest boulders in the region. At one you can see the spot where a piece of the boulder was blown off. The large stone bowl that still stands today in front of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin was made from it.
