Kaltenkirchener Heide West Entrance

Highlight • Natural

The Kaltenkirchener Heide is a former training ground of the German Armed Forces, which was declared to be the FFH area (fauna-flora-habitat area) after abandoning the military use in 2008 together with the "Heidkatener Heide". Since then, a natural paradise for rare and / or endangered plants and animals has developed.

In June 2015, the Kaltenkirchener Heide with about 460 hectares was also declared a National Natural Heritage, which covers approximately 186,000 hectares nationwide. These are nationally important forest and open land areas with high biological diversity from the federal assets, which are developed and maintained for future generations.

In the FFH area forests, rare dry and nutrient-poor grasslands, heaths and Borstgrasbestände occur. In particular, the open habitats harbor a highly specialized flora and fauna. Among them are up to 20 plant species of the Red List of Schleswig-Holstein.

Mönkloh Village and Playground

Highlight • Settlement

Mönkloh, as the westernmost municipality in the Segeberg district, borders the Pinneberg and Steinburg districts in the "triangle". The district (total area 1252 ha) includes approx. 700 ha forest area, which is mainly planted with softwood.

The forest around Mönkloh is a popular local recreational destination, including a forest educational trail. On the edge of the forest, surrounded by hundred-year-old beech trees, a small forest chapel was built by Mr. Jürgen Frese in 2001, which serves as a peaceful retreat for all believers as well as hikers and cyclists.

The state forestry company Hasselbusch and the marl pits towards the Bramau valley are particularly pretty. The highest point, the "Butterberg" with its 33.2 m, is in the game reserve.

Both in the local situation and in the Feldmark stands old and beautiful trees. Special specimens were identified as natural monuments.

Forest Chapel on the Monks' Way

Highlight • Religious Site

The smallest church in northern Germany is located here. The small chapel stands beneath seven hundred-year-old beech trees and offers a place of prayer, silence and harmony with nature. A guest book is available for visitors, pilgrims and cyclists. Baptisms and weddings also take place in the chapel, and once a year, on October 3rd, an ecumenical service is held.
