From the roadside trailhead, the start of the Penmachno trails is a haul up the hillside on fire roads.

It feels like you're climbing for a really long time, especially as you peel off this gravel track and onto more pedally singletrack up though the trees, but rest assured the descents later are worth it!

Penmachno Mountain Bike Trailhead

A very unassuming spot, and certainly none of the facilities that you might expect from more popular trail centres, Penmachno's mountain biking centre is essentially a gravelly lay by as a car park with a wooden shelter.

Here you'll find information about the two loops on offer here, as well as any current trail conditions or closures.

Forest Trail in Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri

Highlight • Trail

Classic Welsh trail centre riding, with some gorgeous mossy green scenes as you wind through the trees. A little rocky, plenty of pedalling and lots of corners.

This might not be the adrenaline rush you're hoping for (more of that to come later), but very good to get your eye in and test your bike skills. An XC riders' paradise!

Dolen Machno and Dolen Eryri Trail Junction

Highlight • Trail

This is the point on the first loop, Dolen Machno, where you can either continue on, back to the trailhead, or add the second loop, Dolen Eryri.

The first loop measures 11.8 miles (19 km) and second 6.8 miles (11 km), so combined it's a mega 20 miles (30 km).

You can also divert off track here to Penmachno, where you'll find a great pub for drinks and snacks.
