Volksdorf Forest

Highlight • Forest

The forest in Volksdorf is a beautiful mixed forest, but mainly beech trees grow here. And what is very surprising is that deer feel at home in the triangular forest, which is completely surrounded by houses, and live here.

It's interesting to imagine how people used to get here to bathe. It must have been really busy here back then. Besides, Maya the Bee was invented here. Unfortunately, the campsite had to close its natural swimming pool...

Bredenbeker Pond

Highlight • Lake

The dammed Bredenbek feeds the pond, which is divided by an island with a dam on both sides. Another island can also be entered via an entrance. The pond was created as a fish pond at the end of the 15th century. Around a hundred years later, the body of water was enlarged.
The vast expanse of water in the nature reserve is surrounded by dense greenery and old trees. Lots of nature for humans and animals. Close to the 60 meter high Bocksberg. On the opposite bank of the Bredenbeker pond there are leisure facilities such as a lido, camping site and golf courses.

Bredenbeker Pond

Highlight • Lake

No matter what time of year! Whether in winter with snow or in autumn with colorful foliage. Here is a quiet place to pause and enjoy the beautiful view. Then you have to decide: take the route towards Ahrensburg or to Lottbek :-) It is best to come twice (or more often) and go both variants :-).

Cycle path "Pferdekoppel"

Highlight • Cycleway

This is actually not (just) a paddock. It is also the name of a path between the houses along the paddock in the direction of Bredenbeker Teich.
Definitely recommendable, because you can drive very nicely here.

The Höltigbaum nature reserve has an eventful history that began with the Vistula Ice Age, which shaped the semi-open pasture landscape. Humans also had an influence on the flora and fauna through agricultural and military use.

The Höltigbaum nature reserve consists of the areas Höltigbaum, Stellmoorer Tunneltal and Ahrensburger Tunneltal. The so-called Hamburger Ring natural area has a total area of 1000 hectares, making it one of the largest nature reserves in the Hanseatic city. The ice masses that lay in the area around 15,000 years ago have done their best to leave behind a beautiful landscape. In addition to the wide, semi-open pastures, you hike over drumlins - long hills left behind by the ice age - and through tunnel valleys that were formed by meltwater running off under the ice masses.

Over time, humans also influenced the area through agricultural use. Extensive cultivation continued for many decades. However, because fertilizers and pesticides were not used, there is now a largely unaffected natural area in which rare species have survived.

For example, the red-backed shrike feels very comfortable in the Höltig tree. The brutal name belongs to a medium-sized songbird that impales its prey - insects, lizards or even a mouse - on the thorns of a tree. There are also woodlarks and yellowhammers, various amphibian species such as sand lizards and great crested newts, and two endangered species: polecats and pygmy shrews. On a hike through the nature reserve you will also come across Galloway cattle, sheep or goats grazing in the wild meadows.

The flora was heavily influenced by the military use of the area in the mid-20th century. The heavy vehicles repeatedly destroyed the vegetation cover, so that many pioneer plants that were more resistant to the difficult conditions were established. The Kratt forests with their multi-stemmed oaks and the wild apple and wild pear trees are also striking.
