Penstocks and Surge Tanks of the Niederwartha Pumped Storage Plant

In 1928, near Oberwartha, the construction of a reservoir for the pumped storage plant in Niederwartha began. Three steel pipes of 3.20 or 2.50 m in diameter and 1,760 m in length supply the turbines in Nierwartha. The drop height is about 143 m.
Of the formerly six turbines, only two can generate electricity today, after the power plant was damaged in 2002 by the Elbe flood. The last owner Vattenfall took the power plant off the grid on 1.1.16. Today it is held up only for the black start case.
