The famous "Battle of Worringen" took place in Worringen, the northernmost district of Cologne. After that, Cologne was officially declared a free imperial city in 1288. But other areas within the district are also steeped in history. The so-called "Worringer Bruch", a 164-hectare horseshoe-shaped moorland area, is over 8,000 years old. Formerly a wet meander of the Rhine, the area is now almost completely silted up. Nevertheless, it is regularly soaked, because the lowest point in Cologne is located here and the water level rises and falls with the level of the Rhine. Numerous animal and plant species find a home in this nature reserve, which has been official since 1991.
