Colinton Tunnel Mural

Highlight • Structure

Scotland's largest historical mural, celebrates the industrial, social, artistic and literary history of the local community.

The Colinton Tunnel Project has been carried out in 2019-2020 by a team of muralists helped by young school kids, youth groups and other volunteers from the community. The project outcome has been to transform the former rail tunnel from a dark, dank no-go area to an enchanting display in a well lit tunnel.

The design concept is based on the poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ by Robert Louis Stevenson, presenting a visual description of the delight of a child's rail journey, plus links to various elements of Colinton's history.

The Colinton Tunnel, built in the 1800s, formed part of the Balerno branch railway line from Slateford to Balerno until it was closed in 1967. It is now part of Sustrans NCN75 running alongside the Water of Leith.
