Eltz Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle Eltz towers like a fairytale castle on a 129 meter high hill in the valley of Elz, a small tributary of the Moselle, which flows around the castle from three sides. The castle had been "lucky" in the course of its history: it could never be conquered by force and was already tended by the owner in the 19th century, cared for and restored for a lot of money, so that today it still stands really well. By the way, for more than 800 years she has been in the possession of the family von and to Eltz-Kempenich, who is committed to ensuring that the castle is maintained and made accessible to the public in the future. In the summer months you can visit the castle. However, you can not drive up to the castle - the steep, small way there you prefer to attack on foot.

Today was the last chance to use the €9 ticket. We took the train from Schweich to Moselkern and from there we walked to Eltz Castle. Photography or filming is not permitted in the castle itself. Therefore there are only pictures from the way there and the castle from the outside.

Very nice hike with a great view of Eltz Castle.

The hike begins in the small village of Moselkern, quietly situated on the Moselle. After just a few minutes, you leave the last houses behind and immerse yourself in an increasingly quiet, wooded landscape. The path leads gently uphill through dense mixed forest, accompanied by the soft babbling of the Elzbach stream. After some distance, the view opens up, and …

An idyllic hike from Moselkern (small cafe) through the Elzbach Valley to Eltz Castle.
Tip: it's best to start early 🥾.

Today, Jürgen is cycling on to Bacharach, and I'm visiting Elz Castle.
To get to Moselkern, I first take the bus to Ürzig Höhe. It's a short 20-minute walk to Ürzig train station, before continuing on by train towards Koblenz to Moselkern, my starting point for today.
From there, I begin my hike through Moselkern and the Elz Valley. At …

A hike on foot to Eltz Castle should definitely be on the itinerary if you are in the corner.
At the weekend it is of course well attended and in some places on the paths it can get a little narrower. 🙈
If you want to go to the castle, you have to be vaccinated or recovered and of course …

Today the tour went from the town of Moselkern to Eltz Castle. A beautiful path winds its way through the Elz valley towards Eltz Castle. The hiking trail is easy to walk and does not pose any major challenges.
If you want to visit the castle, you should arrive early. The entrance fee includes a castle tour and a visit …

Should have been a longer hike, but I totally underestimated how long we would spend at the castle including the guided tour. So it went back the same way. (Attention: Here in the recording only the easy way!)
Information about the castle: burg-eltz.de
Weather warm and muggy - why not just take a short trip...
Masks were compulsory inside the …
