Mittelland Canal Aqueduct (Flood Bridge) Seelze

Highlight • Bridge

Here you have the opportunity to cross under the Mittelland Canal. A bit unreal when you are under a canal, imposing structure!

The Westaue is a small but significant river in the Wunstorf region of Lower Saxony. It rises west of the town and flows through the Wunstorf municipal area before emptying into the Leine River. Along its course, it shapes the landscape with its extensive lowlands, wet meadows, and floodplains, providing valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species.

The Westaue flows through districts such as Mesmerode, Bokeloh, and Luthe and is closely intertwined with the history and development of the town of Wunstorf. Particularly in the area between Wunstorf and Blumenau, the river presents itself in a scenic environment that is of great importance for both nature conservation and recreation. Walking and cycling paths run along the banks, inviting visitors to explore the floodplain landscape and offering residents a piece of nature right on their doorstep.

The Hanover region decided to build the "Scharnhorst Bridge" because simply renovating the structure would not have been possible given the extent of the damage that had occurred. The bridge, built in 1907 and last renovated in 1960, was no longer stable. Their navigability had to be limited to one lane. The new Leinebrücke uses the still usable pillar foundations of its predecessor, on which a new prestressed concrete superstructure is now enthroned. This not only preserved the old spans: by resuming the slight arch shape, the building blends harmoniously into the landscape again. The reliefs of Kaiser Wilhelm II, his wife Auguste Victoria and the namesake – the army reformer Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst who was born in Bordenau – that were removed during the 1960s renovation also returned to their historical place. In winter/spring, the underpass may be closed due to flooding. Markers indicating the highest flood levels are posted on one of the bridge piers.

Otherwise, it's impressive to see ships passing overhead.

April 27, 2023,Hausrunde zum Meer (das kaputte Knie braucht Bewegung!)
The weather was predestined to try out what the knee joint, which was acutely inflamed last week, now thinks of cycling.... I probably won't know the answer until tomorrow ;-).... I like this round to Steinhude. In particular, the way there via SchloRi, Luthe, Wunstorf and Altens Ruh is not only scenically diverse, but also runs almost exclusively on car-free …

The Steinhuder Meer is always a nice destination for me - especially outside of holiday periods and weekends 😉 - when the weather is as nice as today, there's nothing left to complain about.
And the fish sandwich is simply part of it!😋

The first tour this year in wonderful weather - almost a standard route. But this time with photos
