It is gigantic what this dam wall has to hold on water. It doesn't actually look as big as other dams in Thuringia.

Hohenwarte Dam

Highlight • Monument

This 75 meter high and 412 meter long dam was built between 1936 and 1942. This required 250 people to give up their homes - an entire village was flooded for construction. Today she gives you a wonderful view of the lake.

The view alone is sensational. There is a wooden bench right under the large rock where you can linger.

Saale Singletrail Below Hemmkoppe

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful, narrow, partly rooty and stony single trail, best as a downhill ride from the direction of Drognitz/Liebschütz. 👌🏻 Please be considerate of hikers! For me more S1 than S0, but it also depends on the weather conditions (wet versus dry)!

Such a beautiful piece of earth. Incredible views over forests and mountains of the Saale valley. A tough tour by bike and on foot - some sections of the route are definitely not passable with a mountain bike. The trail is very narrow, strewn with roots, loose rocks and loose soil, sloping and overgrown with thornbushes and nettles. But all of this is absolutely worth it and will certainly make me a "repeat offender". The views are amazing!

A great place with a very nice view of the dammed Saale.
It just makes me sad when places are or have been wiped out because of mining or, as here, a dam.

The bark beetle has changed the landscape dramatically. Great views, but also huge bare areas have emerged.
The paths and trails are still great and easy to ride.

The tour around the Hohenwarte reservoir is highly recommended. I did the tour clockwise and loved it! In my opinion, the direction of travel would be just as possible in the opposite direction. The route consists of approx. 40% cool, partly narrow trails and 40% forest/forest paths. The rest of the roads, connecting paths via campsites or similar.
In order …

Great tour, but very toxic climbs and difficulty levels that are not suitable for all passengers.
But the bottle of white wine at the end makes the pain and curses fade in the setting sun 😎😇😜

After spending the night in Hohenfelden, the goal for the day should be the MTB circuit around the Hohenwarte reservoir (4:05 h / 13.4 km/h). 🏞

Parked right after the dam wall, we drove clockwise and after passing it and a little foretaste of the climbs, the MTB terrain lured us. 🤩
The northern terrain is very varied and also …

It was really a brilliant tour, but it demanded a lot from me. You don't want to believe it at 61 km. There are some pushing and carrying passages and not every section is recommended. But most of the trails are really great.

Today we drove around the Hohenwarte. Was chic and more strenuous than we thought.

I have to thank my school friend from Ilmenau(@germangeo) for such a nice tour idea.
I was only supposed to download it for him (GPX file) - he wanted to ride it with friends today.
Since they were already a large enough group and I prefer to take 2 more photos, we started alone.
The weather was perfect for it. …

Today circled the Hohenwartetalsperre and a detour to the Wysburg and the Ziemestal bridge. At first it was foggy and frosty, but it got really nice in the afternoon. The trails around the reservoir are top notch and very recommendable. In particular, the Hemmkoppetrail tears. Sometimes the paths circle so close to the rocks that you get scared.
