View of Námafjall Geothermal Area

The rock is a beautiful landmark on the climb, which is steep with short and long hairpin bends. In the meantime, enjoy the beautiful moonscape below you.

Sulfur Mound (Fumarole) at Hverir

Highlight • Natural Monument

These sulfur craters are the result of volcanic activity, which emits sulfur gases from the Earth. These gases can build up and crystallize, creating towers of pure sulfur. These towers can have a distinctive yellow color and emit a strong odor. The whole thing is impressive.

Hverir (Hverarönd)

Highlight • Natural Monument

At the foot of Namafjall lies Hverir, one of the largest solfat tar fields in the country. Boiling gray mud, yellow sulphurous shine, red glow of oxidized earth... amidst white fumaroles, the pulsations of the earth present an unreal spectacle. In mud pits, soil and stone are dissolved by acidic water into a bubbling mixture. A little further on, emissions of steam full of hydrogen sulfide (that typical rotten egg smell) are converted into sulfur deposits after contact with oxygen. This sulfur was used for the production of gunpowder.

Hverir Geothermal Area

Highlight • Natural Monument

If you want to enjoy the view of the geothermal field from the adjacent mountain, you should (from the parking lot) take the trail from the right to the top. Left is only recommended with really good grip under the soles.
Tip 2: Do not touch the gray sulphurous soil. The sticks to the finger and you have the entire rest of the day to feel the need to wash your hands.
Luckily, there's the highlight nearby: "Outside shower" :)
