Rolandsbrunnen Weismain

Highlight • Monument

Since the late Middle Ages, an underground canal has passed through the marketplace of Weismain, supplied the city fountain with water. This so-called Roland fountain was built 1572-1577. The figure is said to come from the Bamberg sculptor Pankraz Wagner. Since the original figure probably since 1879 in the courtyard of the moated castle in Mitwitz, the Weismainer received a copy. Unclear is the interpretation of the figure: A "Roland" is probably not. In Weismain the high public courts took place at the well in the 16th century, so that connections with the quite similar pillory figures, especially from Southern Germany, are conceivable.

Weismain historic town centre

Highlight • Historical Site

Historic buildings in the old town include a street market established in the early 13th century, well-preserved city fortifications, a Renaissance town hall (1543), the parish church of St. Martin, a market fountain with a Roland statue (1577), half-timbered houses, and the Kastenhof courtyard with the North JURA Museum and tourist information.

Weismain is also a convenient starting point for day trips to Banz Abbey, the Vierzehnheiligen Basilica, Coburg, Kulmbach, Bamberg, or Bayreuth, as well as to Franconian Switzerland, the Fichtel Mountains, or the Franconian Forest.

Cycling enthusiasts should note Whit Monday: On this day, car-free cycling and hiking can be enjoyed around the Kleinziegenfelder Valley.

Friesen Spring

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

The ascent from the center of Kasendorf to the Jura hill near Welschenkahl has a gradient of up to 8% over a length of around 2.7 km. The mountain runs quite evenly and can therefore be cycled well. The steepest part is right at the beginning.
