Evangelical Church Opherdicke

Highlight • Religious Site

In Opherdicke, a district of Holzwickede in the Unna district, North Rhine-Westphalia, there are two important church buildings that are of both historical and architectural interest: the Protestant church and the Catholic parish church of St. Stephanus.

The Opherdicke Evangelical Church was built between 1120 and 1150 in the Romanesque style from Anröchter green sandstone. It is dedicated to Saint Stephen and is characterized by a Romanesque transept basilica with a side aisle in the north and a possibly older west tower. From 1868 to 1870 the church was expanded by the building inspector H. Hartmann, which included an additional transept yoke with a yoke, a polygonal apse and short, round choir flank towers. The building was extensively renovated between 1982 and 1984. The church is a listed building and is a testament to Romanesque architecture in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Catholic parish church of St. Stephanus in Opherdicke is also a listed building and is located at Dorfstrasse 47. The neo-Gothic hall church made of hammer-right quarry stone with a west tower and a rectangular choir was built in 1893 under the direction of Gerhard August Fischer. The plastered lower part of the tower comes from a previous building from the end of the 17th century. The tower was expanded in 1893 and received a spire made of sheet copper. The church is accessible through the main portal on the tower and has further entrances on the north side as well as a stone staircase to the "Lily Chapel" next to the chancel. The church is characterized by its neo-Gothic architecture and historical furnishings, which include, among other things, a lavishly carved pulpit from around 1700, which was restored in 1965.

Both churches represent Opherdicke's religious and cultural history and are important points of contact for visitors interested in architecture and church history.
