New Palace Leonberg

Highlight • Castle

Leonberg Castle

After the old one-story building burned down at this point, Heinrich Graf von der Mühle-Eckart built the neo-baroque palace with a rich facade structure in 1885-90. The executing construction company was the well-known company Heilmann from Munich, which is said to have used designs by Leo von Klenze.
Apart from interior modernizations, the castle has remained more or less unchanged since the time it was built. In the aerial photo you can see a three-wing system.
The east facade facing the local church of St. Leonhard is delimited by a small garden with high brick columns and an iron railing. The carved entrance door and the bulbous balcony with iron grating emphasize the central axis of the seven-axle building. The main entrance leads into a barrel-vaulted and stuccoed vestibule with ornate glass doors. This is followed by the centrally located staircase with a gallery. In the stucco of the stairwell, the family coat of arms is depicted in a round scrollwork cartouche. Some of the living and representational rooms also have stucco ceilings. On the west wing of the palace there is a roof turret with a viewing platform.
The castle includes a farm building attached to the castle building, which bears the year 1877. The neo-baroque garden was transformed into a park.
It is worth mentioning that the American General George S. Patton, Commander-in-Chief of the 3rd Army, took up quarters in Leonberg Castle for several weeks from April 23, 1945. At that time everything in the castle that wasn't nailed down was said to have been taken away.
The castle is still the seat of the count's family Von der Mühle-Eckart and Maximilian Freiherr von Wiedersperg and is not open to the public.

Chapel of the Crucified Savior, Hagenau

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel of the Crucified Saviour

Slightly to the side of federal highway 15 in Hagenau, stands the village chapel "To the Crucified Saviour", probably built in the last third of the 18th century, perhaps in 1771. It belongs to the late Rococo or early Classicism period and is a simple, single-axis, rectangular gable-roof building.
The side walls are structured by wide plaster bands; the facade is designed in a Tuscan column order with two pairs of pilasters that support a bulbous beam and frame a slightly protruding basket-arch entrance. A small figure of the Virgin Mary stands in a niche in the gable. The roof has a four-sided wooden turret, whose Angelus bell from 1771 - it was also used as a death bell in the past - could hardly hold its own against the increasing traffic today.
The furnishings are modest and nothing remains from the time of construction except for four corner pilasters, which are not uniformly designed but have different capitals. The walls are divided by large segmental arches; while the two windows on the long sides have square plaster frames on the outside, they have falling segmental arches on the inside. During a recent restoration of the chapel, which is owned by the Fischer family, ceiling paintings were discovered under a layer of paint that were not exposed for cost reasons.

Leonberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Leonberg Castle

The castle is located at the highest point of Leonberg and is therefore visible from afar. The castle was strategically designed and from it a view over the surrounding area was possible.
The "liemperc" castle was probably built by a family of the same name in the 13th century. It is not known whether they were ministeriales or nobles and to whom they were indebted. The visible buildings come from later times and were probably built in the 14th century. The castle itself is mentioned in 1378, when the Hofer gave the "Veste" to the Losnitz. The people of Gnändorf are said to have used it around 1400 as a starting point for raids and ransom demands from Regensburg merchants. 1422 comes with the Sinzenhofers again more stability.
Leonberg was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, but later rebuilt.
However, the castle itself has long since been abandoned, and the nobility reside in their more comfortable and larger Hofmark residences in Pirkensee and Fischbach. The administration of the Hofmark initially remains in Leonberg. In 1797 the von Eckart family took over the rule and in 1890 built a new castle in the village, where family members still live today. The "Old Castle" goes to private individuals who build heavily over the complex. Today there are 7 owners, some of whom still live there themselves.
An irregular structure from the 14th and 16th centuries has survived from the castle, with a tower with a gable roof, stepped gables and a pediment on the north side. Two residential buildings are attached to this tower. The Veste once had four round towers, of which only two are partially recognizable today. The formerly mighty enclosing wall and the moat can only be guessed at. The south-west ring of walls is now integrated into the residential building.
