The vantage point "Kanzel" (399 meters) with the Friedrich-Meyer-Hütte (shelter) is always worth a detour. From here you have a great view of the Edersee, especially the Hammerbergspitze (when the water is low, the whole headland comes to light) and Waldeck Castle. The four tree-trunk chairs are very inviting for a rest, from where you have the best view while you're having a meal.

Hexenkopf

Very quaint paths until then, Edersee-typical steep slope stop. :-) From the square itself you then have a good view. The same applies to the Hexenplatz, but it is still worth hiking through both places. Sometimes the way is the goal...

You may notice the trees and bushes that are sometimes quite gnarled. The use of pasture by goats during the last centuries and their browsing on the plants is one of the reasons for this. In addition, there is the barren soil and the dry rocks, which only allow sparse vegetation.

For hikers, however, it is a very attractive path, because the atmosphere is beautiful and the views of the Edersee are magnificent.

Edersee Dam

Highlight • Monument

A very impressive structure and a highly recommended highlight.
The 400 m long and 47 m high Eder Dam was built between 1908 and 1914.

It serves to secure shipping on the Weser River in the summer, as well as to generate electricity
and as flood protection. With a capacity of up to 200 million cubic meters,
the Edersee is the third-largest reservoir in Germany and, with over 400,000 overnight stays, a popular holiday region.

Guided tours are available from June to August on Wednesdays at 4 p.m., lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Edersee Atlantis: Due to the flooding of the Eder Valley, the villages of Asel, Berich,
and Bringhausen were submerged; only at very low water levels do they still appear with their foundations.

You can still see the Asel Bridge and parts of the old cemeteries.
An old church bell was placed a little higher on the shore and still stands there today.

On May 17, 1943, a British bomb tore a huge hole in the dam. The flood killed 68 people, destroyed 213 buildings, and destroyed numerous bridges. The crops were also destroyed.

Reconstruction of the dam began that same year.

May 13, 2022,Edersee (über den Urwaldsteig zum Schloss Waldeck)
Our plan to circumnavigate the Edersee in three stages via the Urwaldsteig failed due to the local accommodation options. So we planned two short tours for the arrival and departure days and one longer tour for the third day.

Our first round begins close to the Edertalsperre, which we crossed and then continued to Hemfurth to the edge of the …

From the beautiful Waldeck we are on the Urwaldsteig to the Hermannshöhe. A great vantage point on the Edersee.
Incidentally, it is the third largest reservoir in Germany.
After nice conversations with other hikers, we then headed towards the dam.
A really impressive building, 400 meters long and 48 meters high.
The Edersee is 27 km long and 47 meters …

Today we took a lovely walk around the Edersee—partly on the Urwaldsteig trail, partly on the Kellerwaldsteig trail. The area is truly impressive: well-maintained paths, beautiful nature, and consistently great views of the lake. 👌🙂

Such a gift is a pleasure to redeem: a weekend package at the Hotel Schloss Waldeck 🤩.
Until the hotel rooms were ready, we were able to explore the area with a long hike.

By car to "Zündstoff" 🔥🏍️🅿️, at the Peterskopf stop on the Urwaldpfad or Kellerwaldsteig, whichever 🤷🏼‍♂️🥾🌳🍃⛰️🏞️ The main thing is that it's beautiful 🤩. Challenging forest paths, over roots, sticks and stones, up to viewing platforms, every now and then a whole tree was in the way. Really cool, 👍🏼🌳🌲🪵🏞️, always a beautiful view …

Easter Monday hike at Lake Edersee in great hiking weather 😀
We started in Waldeck, where we first enjoyed the magnificent view of the lake from the castle.
We continued along the Urwaldsteig trail via Hermannshöhe and the Kanzel to Hemfurt. We enjoyed a delicious 🍔 at Zündstoff, and of course, the obligatory ice cream at the dam was a …
